Care experts at Houghton recommend carrying out a “protection inspection” in early fall to prepare vehicles for winter’s damaging elements. Houghton is a Provincial leader in automotive aftermarket services and accessories, and we recommend several measures that drivers can use to “winterize” vehicles, protecting them from salt, snow, and mud:
Wash the Vehicle Regularly

Washing your vehicle regularly keeps it from corroding. Removing the summer’s entire residue from the exterior is an important step to avoiding winter corrosion.

Make sure the car wash you attend uses fresh and not recycled water. Recycled water can contain salt and other chemicals from previous cars.

For “do-it-yourselfers,” you should use a brand name soap that is designed to clean vehicles.

Inspect and wash the undercarriage and the interior of the body panels on the vehicle to prevent premature corrosion damage, loss of resale value, and expensive body repairs.

Wash wheel wells, clean door drain holes, and treat interior vinyl surfaces to ensure proper care.

According to the Salt Institute, an average of about 15 million tons of salt is used to de-ice slippery roads in the United States every winter. Salt can cause your vehicle to corrode easily. Despite many improvements in vehicle design and galvanized sheet metal, vehicles will rust when their iron or steel parts are exposed to salt and water.
“The only sure defence against corrosion of a vehicles seams and body panels is an aftermarket rust protection application,” Houghton says. “Professional rust protection application and warranties should cover all body panels and structures prone to rust-especially the hidden areas.”
